Begin with a daily review of Pig Latin grammar and pronunciation. The best way to practice your grammar and pronunciation is to simply set aside 15 or 20 minutes every night for a family discussion in your new language. Make sure that the whole family is willing to correct one another, as positive criticism is the best way to learn.
Assign yourself and your family a small writing assignment each day. Write a poem, an essay or simply your grocery list. The act of writing the words of a second language is a great way to learn, as it solidifies grammar as well as spelling.
Share your written assignments. Choose a time to read your written works out loud, or post your weekly work on the refrigerator. Again, make sure that mistakes are clearly corrected as early as possible so that language mistakes do not become ingrained habits.
Turn family game night into Pig Latin night. As you enjoy your favorite board games, speak only in Pig Latin, translating game cards and creating game penalties for speaking English. Not only is this a fun way to add a twist to your old games, it is a great way to get practice and learn your new language.
Seek out other speakers of Pig Latin to help you learn. Whether others speak Igpay Atinlay fluently or are learning just as you and your family are learning, the experience of others always adds to the learning dynamic. Consider dinner parties or sleep-overs where only Pig Latin is allowed.
