How to Play Indoor Hopscotch

Hopscotch is a simple game that helps kids develop balance and hopping skills. It's commonly played outdoors, using chalk to make the game, but it is also a great indoor activity that gets kids up and exercising on cold or rainy days. Help your child set up the game and then join the fun or invite one or more friends over.

Instructions

    • 1

Set up the hopscotch game on any floor area in your home. It can be a carpeted, tiled or wood floor surface. Use masking tape to outline the nine, connecting squares. Make the squares large enough for a foot to fit inside.

    • 2

Design the hopscotch game so the first three boxes are on top of each other, then two boxes are side-by-side, then a single box, then two more boxes side-by-side and the final box at the top. Shape the final box like a half circle. Number the boxes from 1 to 9 starting at the bottom using the masking tape. The ninth half-circle space is considered "home."

    • 3

Find a small object to use as the marker. A penny or bean bag works well. Toss the marker into the first box. It must land in the designated square without bouncing out or touching a line, or you lose your turn.

    • 4

Hop on one foot when there is one square and place two feet down when there are side-by-side squares. You must hop over the square with the marker and continue hopping down the playing board. The box numbered "9" is a rest area to be used before you hop back.

    • 5

Turn around and head back, stopping to pick up the marker. If you successfully make it through the course, continue your turn throwing the marker onto the next numbered box.

    • 6

Forfeit your turn if the marker doesn't land in the box, your foot lands on a line, you fail to hop on one foot, you step outside a box or fall over. The next player takes a turn each time someone fails to follow all the rules.

    • 7

Resume your turn by throwing the marker into the same square that you committed a foul on. The winner is the first one to throw a marker in the number "9" space and successfully complete the course.
