How to Play Mumbletypeg

It may seem incredible now but there was a time when almost every boy carried a pocket knife, even to school. A popular game at the time was mumbletypeg, which was played with pocket knives. Funny that no one thought to tell boys not to play this game. Here's how.

Instructions

    • 1

Begin the game by tossing an opened pocket knife at the ground. The goal is to get the knife to stick into the ground. If the knife is leaning, the tip of the handle has to be two finger widths above the ground.

    • 2

Determine if either player failed to stick the knife into the ground to the depth required. The player whose knife didn't stick has lost.

    • 3

Proceed with more difficult ways of tossing the knife, including flipping it with two fingers, holding it in an open palm and slapping your hand with the other and tossing it over your head.

    • 4

Play war by drawing a circle on the ground and dividing it in half. Each half is one player's territory. Each player tries to stick his or her knife in the other's territory, after which a portion of that territory now belongs to the player.

    • 5

Play stretch by throwing the knife as close to your own feet as possible. With each throw, the player moves one foot to the place where the knife stuck into the ground. The game is over when one player falls over.

    • 6

Drive a wooden matchstick into the ground and try to hit it with the knife. The game is over when the matchstick is forced into the ground by the knives until it can't be seen and the player who scored the fewest hits on the matchstick must pull it out of the ground using only their teeth.
