How to Play Ghost in the Graveyard

Get a spooky game of tag together on a cloudy night, and you're playing Ghost in the Graveyard, a time-honored children's game that grown-ups can also enjoy. This is great fun for a sinister theme party or as a spontaneous activity on one of those long summer nights.

Instructions

  1. How to Play Ghost in the Graveyard

    • 1

Find a group of friends who are old enough to run around safely.

    • 2

Choose a house with front and back yards or a similar area of play for the "Graveyard." The front or back porch will be home base, and there should be a clear path for running all the way around the house. Extra places for a "Ghost" to hide will help make the game more fun.

    • 3

Choose one player to be the Ghost, or the equivalent of "It" in Tag.

    • 4

Gather all players except the Ghost together on home base. While the Ghost hides, players chant slowly, "One o'clock, two o'clock, three o'clock, four . . ." and continue. After "eleven o'clock," yell loudly to let the Ghost know that hiding time is over: "Midnight! Hope I don't see a Ghost tonight!"

    • 5

****ter and attempt to run all the way around the house, returning to home base. If you see the Ghost, yell, "Ghost!" and try not to get tagged. If the Ghost tags you, you turn into a Ghost and must now tag others.

    • 6

Hide with any other Ghosts if you were tagged. The players who made it to home base get to play again.

    • 7

Play until everyone has been tagged. Last one tagged becomes the single Ghost for a new game.
