How to Cross Gaze Switch

A cross gaze switch, also called a transposition effect, is a technique used by stage magicians during a performance. The name refers to the sleight of hand done by crossing your hands while looking in another direction and using your pockets to switch out one object for another. Practice the cross gaze switch with salt and pepper packets. When you become proficient at this stage magician technique, use it to amaze your friends.

Instructions

    • 1

Inspect the salt and pepper packets. They will have a flat border on the end where they are glued shut. Select one pepper packet and one salt packet. Cut a tiny slit, roughly 1/16 inch away from the end of each packet.

    • 2

Pour out the packets on a piece of paper, one packet per piece of paper. Bend the paper into a U-shape, carefully holding it so that the salt or pepper does not fall out and use the paper as a funnel to pour the salt into the pepper packet and the pepper into the salt packet.

    • 3

Wipe down the cut edges of the packets to remove any salt or pepper grains that may have stuck to them. Glue the packets shut. Apply a small dab of glue to the cut slits and press the packet down, smoothing it out with your fingers so that the packets dry flat and the slits are glued shut.

    • 4

Place the pepper packet in your left pocket and the salt packet in your right back pocket. Put a felt-tipped pen in your right-front pocket.

    • 5

Set the other 10 pepper packets on a table and have a helper pick one out. Take the normal pepper packet from her and tell her that you want her to put her initials on it.

    • 6

Hold the normal pepper packet out in front of you in your right hand, with it lying flat against your fingers. Insert your left hand into your left pocket and look down at it as you do so, as if you are searching for a pen and pick up the modified pepper packet. Look up at your helper and think to yourself "It's not there" so that you have the proper facial expression.

    • 7

Look at your right pocket and, as pull your left hand out of your left pocket, cover it with your right hand and "switch" the pepper packets by holding the normal pepper packet in your right hand with your thumb as you touch your right hand palm down to your left hand that is facing palm up. This will make it appear that you just placed the normal pepper packet into your left hand, when you actually just picked up the modified one.

    • 8

Insert your right hand into your right-front pocket. Let go of the pepper packet and pick up the felt-tipped pen. Hand the pen and the fixed pepper packet to your helper and have her sign it. As she writes her initials, take the modified salt packet out of your back pocket with your right hand.

    • 9

Ask your helper to cover the pepper packet with her hand. Take the felt-tipped pen back with your left hand and pick up the condiment holder with the same hand. Pass the holder to your right hand on top of the modified salt packet. Place several salt packets on the table and ask your other helper to pick one. Take the packet they pick in your left hand. Look and see that your pen is in your left hand and pass the holder to your left hand, so that the fixed salt packet is now visible.

    • 10

Place the condiment holder on the table, over the remaining salt packets; as you do so, let go of the normal salt packet that was picked by your helper so that it is in the pile of packets. Hand the pen and fixed salt packet to your other helper and have her sign it. Ask her to cover it with her hand.

    • 11

Pick up the condiment holder and place the salt packets remaining on the table back into it. Put the felt-tipped pen back into your right front pocket. Announce that you are going to make the two packets switch places. Do a sort of "magical gesture" as desired and ask them to look at the packets. They will see that they have not switched. Tell them that you "felt" something happen to them, then pick up the salt packet and tear it open along the glued slit edge and pour it out onto the table. Do the same with the pepper packet to reveal that they have switched.
