Icebreakers
At the beginning of the year, it's important to welcome all of your new Brownies in, especially if you only have a couple of new girls joining a mostly intact group. One simple icebreaker has the troop form a circle. The leader will toss the ball to a girl, who will say her name. The whole circle will repeat her name, and then the girl will toss the ball to someone else. The game goes on until every girl has said her name.
Throwing Games
After sitting and working on a craft or listening to the lesson for the week, your Brownies will be ready to work off some of the energy they've stored up. Make some bean bags during craft time, or keep some on hand. Use some chalk to mark off some targets, and give each target a point value. You can also play "hot potato," where girls toss a ball around the group while music plays. When the music turns off, whoever has the ball is eliminated.
Outdoor Games
When it's nice outside, take your Brownies outside to play in the afternoon sun. Take a parachute or a big bedsheet outside and play "Parachute," raising it up and down. Have some of the girls take turns hiding under the parachute. You can also take some waterproof cushions or cardboard squares and play "Sharks and Islands." This game requires the girls to find an "island" (a cardboard square, for example) when the sharks attack at the leader's call. Keep removing islands until only one is left and many of the girls are having to get into the same area.
Juliette Low Action Game
This game celebrates the founder of Girl Scouts, Juliette Gordon Low. If you order this game from the Girl Scouts, you'll get a set of action cards to give to the girls, each with its own instruction. As you read the story of Juliette Low, the girls will see when and how to respond. They will have fun carrying out simple choreography while learning about the history of the organization.
