Internet Scavenger Hunt
Send third grade students on a sun-themed scavenger hunt around the Internet. Children should be accompanied by an adult when on the Internet, so plan the scavenger hunt to include the help of a teacher or parent. Ask students a series of questions relating to the sun and ask them to use the Internet to research the answers. Some possible facts to look for include the distance of the sun from earth and the sun's temperature. Provide links to some reference sites that the kids might use in their research.
Treasure Hunt
Teach third grade students about the sun by sending them on a treasure hunt. Cut sun shapes out of yellow and orange construction paper and hang them around the classroom. Send students on a hunt to collect the sun shapes. Write sun-related facts on the back of the cutouts and ask students to read the message to the class. Award sunglasses or a sun-shaped object as a prize to the student who finds the most suns.
Puzzle Scavenger Hunt
Show third graders the importance of teamwork with a puzzle scavenger hunt. Buy or make a jigsaw puzzle with a sun theme. To make a puzzle, simply glue a picture onto cardboard and cut it into pieces. Hide the pieces around the classroom or the school yard. Have the students work together to find all the pieces of the puzzle and then allow them to put the puzzle together as a group.
Other Scavenger Hunt Ideas
Other scavenger hunt ideas include providing third grade students with magazines and asking them to look through them for pictures or words related to the sun. The students may find a drawn picture of a sun, someone sunbathing or the word sun. Another scavenger hunt is to hide sun-related items such as sunglasses, sunscreen and flip-flops for students to find. Allow them to keep the items they find as prizes.
