How to Make a Corn Bag Toss

A staple of backyard parties and tailgates, a bean bag toss game, also known as cornhole, is a popular way to pass the time and have fun with friends and family. The object of the game is to throw your team's colored bean bags into a hole in a wooden platform a short distance away. While it's possible to buy bean bag toss games, making your own can be a satisfying experience that lets you design the platforms to your specifications.

Instructions

  1. Building the Platforms

    • 1

Cut the target holes in the 2-by-4-foot pieces of plywood. Use a compass to draw a 6-inch-diameter hole 6 inches down from the top of the board and 9 inches from the sides of the board. Cut the holes with a jigsaw, and use sandpaper to smooth out any rough edges.

    • 2

Build the base by first cutting the 2-by-4s into 12 pieces: four 12-inch pieces, four 4-feet pieces and four 22-inch pieces. Connect two of the 4-foot pieces with two of the 22-inch pieces, forming a rectangle. Use a hammer and four 3-inch nails to fasten the 4-foot pieces to the 22-inch pieces. This will give you the frame for one base, so repeat the process to give yourself the other base.

    • 3

Attach the plywood pieces to the frames. Lay the plywood on top of the frame and, beginning in one corner, hammer a 3-inch nail every 2 inches along the frame.

    • 4

Attach the legs by connecting two 12-inch pieces to the top of the frame (the side with the target holes). Use a hammer to attach the legs to the inside of the frame with two 3-inch nails. Stand the whole thing up, and make sure both sides are even. Use the sandpaper to shave down one of the legs if needed. Repeat the process and attach the other two 12-inch pieces to the other frame.

    • 5

Decorate your target boards in any way you see fit. Paint the logo of your college or favorite sports team. You'll be using your bean bag toss games for years to come, so you want to make sure the design is something you'll always enjoy.

    Making the Bean Bags

    • 6

Cut 16 pieces of thick fabric, possibly duck cloth, which will hold up to the wear and tear of the game. You'll want eight pieces of fabric in two different colors for each of the two teams. Pieces should be about 6 inches long and 6 inches wide.

    • 7

Sew two pieces of the same color together, leaving a small hole to dump the feed corn in. Use either a sewing machine or needle and thread, whichever you prefer.

    • 8

Dump approximately 16 oz. of feed corn into the hole; then sew up the hole, making sure none of the corn can fall out. Repeat this process to make eight bean bags, four in each color.
