Things You'll Need
Instructions
Locate a safe area away from buildings, trees and overhangs. Place rocks in a 5-foot diameter circle. Dig a pit in the center about a foot deep. Lay two logs in the pit, leaving about a foot between them. Place a pile of tinder between the logs. Lay bundles of tinder tepee-style against the logs. Reach in and light the kindling, being careful not to bump the structure. Lightly fan the fire to fuel the flame.
Have children hunt for long sticks. Longer sticks are safest. Make a game of seeing who can find the longest stick. Use these for toasting marshmallows and hot dogs.
Play games around the bonfire. Tell round robin ghost stories. One person starts the story and each person in the circle takes a turn to add his part. Other games like charades, telephone and truth or dare can also be played. Sing campfire songs.
Safely put out the bonfire before leaving the site. Check to see if the fire has died down to ash and small pieces. Pour water on the fire pit until it stops smoking and sizzling. Use a shovel to distribute the water throughout the logs and tinder. Check that the fire pit is cool to the touch.
