How to Build a Texas Horseshoe Box

Replace heavy iron horseshoes with inexpensive hardware washers for a backyard throwing game the entire family can enjoy outdoors in Texas Horseshoes. Texas Horseshoes uses wooden boxes with holes as targets for players to throw the washers into and score points. Younger children can stand closer to the game box to get them into the game with older family members. Using plywood, boards and some screws you can create your own Texas Horseshoes box at home.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a mark 3 feet from the end of a 2-by-4 with a pencil. Measure 3 feet from the first mark and make a second mark. Create three 15-inch sections by placing additional marks.

    • 2

Measure and mark a second 2-by-4 identical to the first. Cut each 2-by-4 into sections along the marks using a saw.

    • 3

Place two 3-foot boards parallel to each other. Insert two 15-inch boards between them, one at each end to create a rectangular box. Insert a third 15-inch board between the two longer boards in the center of the box for support.

    • 4

Screw the two boards together using 3-inch wood screws to create a frame. Repeat to create a second identical frame.

    • 5

Measure and cut one sheet of 5/8-inch plywood into two sections measuring 3 feet by 18 inches. Draw three horizontal lines across each plywood section, at 8 inches, 18 inches, and 28 inches. Measure 9 inches from the side of the boards and mark the center of each line.

    • 6

Use a compass to draw a 3-inch circle around each center mark. Cut a 3-inch hole at each circle using a jigsaw to form the top of the box.

    • 7

Fit one sheet to each frame so the edges of the face sheets are flush with the outer edges of the frames. Secure each sheet to a frame with screws to create the game boxes. Sand each game box and coat with polyurethane for waterproofing.
