Games to Play With Jr High Girls at Church

Junior high girls are old enough that they don't like games for young children -- or they can't admit that they do -- but they're not yet so old that they have the requisite "bored teenager" attitude about any activity. Junior high girls still enjoy running around, laughing and having fun together. They're generally willing to try new activities and love creative games, so incorporating fun games for junior high girls at church isn't difficult.
  1. Scripture Scavenger Hunt

    • Create a list of scriptures that mention an easy-to-find item such as sand, salt or

rocks. Have the girls divide into teams and give them the list, a Bible and a bag in which to collect their items. When you tell them to start, they must look up each scripture, write down the item from the scripture that they will find and then go find the item. Clever teams will have one or two people looking up scriptures and writing clues while others on the team run and find the items, so if you want to make the game last longer and be more challenging, only give the teams one clue at a time.

    Crafts

    • Girls at the junior high age are often excited about crafts. Instead of a standard game, try providing a simple craft activity. Crafts can have a religious twist, or they can build fellowship and fun. Try tie dye, personalized pillow cases or T-shirts made with puff paint or other fabric paint or try jewelry of some kind. Knotted hemp bracelets or necklaces are inexpensive, and there are several beaded jewelry crafts that are inexpensive, simple and attractive as well. You could make craft time into a competition, and have a judge come in and judge the crafts, giving awards for such things as "Most Creative," "Best Use of Color" and "Most Unique."

    Outside Movie

    • Consider an outdoor movie, or a movie in a large, open room such as a gym. Set up a projector to a DVD player or a laptop, use a huge sheet on the outside wall of the church or in the gym and watch a favorite, clean flick. Serve popcorn and pop, and bring your own blankets and pillows. For a fun variation, have the girls make "cars" out of cardboard boxes before the movie, and make it a "drive-in" movie. Have a trivia quiz game about the movie, or play movie bingo as you watch the show together.

    Scripture Charades

    • For a game sure to bring laughs in abundance, play a game of scripture charades. You can have the girls choose the scripture story, but it will go faster and be more fun for them if you have ideas typed out on slips of paper already and have them draw a paper when it is their turn. You can have them act out stories like the following: Lot's wife, David and Goliath, Bathsheba, Joshua at the walls of Jericho, the 10 lepers, Noah and the Ark, Jonah, the Nativity, Abraham and Isaac/sacrifice or Paul on the road to Damascus.
