1970s Birthday Games

Whether the birthday girl grew up in the 1970s or is too young to have been there but thinks the decade is super cool, celebrate her special day with a retro birthday party theme. The birthday girl and her party guests will enjoy a trip back to the 1970s with birthday party games inspired by the pop culture of the decade.
  1. Name That Tune

    • Purchase a few 1970s compilation CDs or a variety of downloads of songs that were popular during the decade. Play a snippet from each song that equals as many seconds as the birthday honoree's age. For instance, if he is celebrating his 40th birthday, play 40 seconds of each tune. Guests either play individually or as teams. Award one to five points per correct answer. The first person or team to score as many points as the birthday celebrant's age wins.

    Pet Rock Painting

    • In 1975 the pet rock was a popular fad item that became one of the iconic symbols of the 1970s. Bring the pet rock back for a nostalgic birthday party activity. Collect a bunch of rocks from outside. Set up a table with craft paints, glue and embellishments such as stickers, pipe cleaners, beads and googly eyes. Have each guest choose a rock to decorate and name. Let the birthday girl decide the winners in categories such as prettiest, silliest, scariest and ugliest pet rock.

    Disco Freeze Dance

    • Play some 1970s disco music and instruct players to perform their best disco moves. Stop the music at random intervals. When the music stops, players must freeze in place. The birthday boy must catch the players who do not freeze in time and send them out of the game. When the music resumes, so does the dancing. Repeat this process several times until only one player remains.

Another variation of this game is to see how long players can remain in their "frozen" positions. Keep the music turned off for 30 seconds. When the birthday boy catches players moving or changing positions, they are out of the game. As the game continues, increase the increments of time that players must remain frozen. The last player to remain frozen wins. For added entertainment, allow the birthday boy to carry a camera and snap photos of the players in their disco poses.

    Name That Brady

    • "The Brady Bunch" aired on network television from 1969 until 1974 and has been running in syndication ever since. Create a trivia game based on this pop culture icon. Create questions based on situations that happened to the characters. For example, ask which Brady played Johnny Bravo, who asked Davy Jones to the prom and which Brady spoke with a lisp. Players guess which Brady Bunch character they think is the answer. Score one point for each correct answer. Play individually or divide into teams. Award prizes to the highest scoring players.
