Water Balloons
If you are having your church picnic on a warm day, consider a water balloon toss game. Have people pair up in groups of two, preferably of two people who do not know one another well. Each couple will stand in front of one another with a water balloon. Beginning with a distance of about 3 to 4 feet, instruct each couple to toss the balloon to one another, then step back about a foot after each catch. If the water balloon bursts, the couple is out of the game. The last couple remaining wins the water balloon toss.
Bible Look-Up Race
Combine a traditional foot race with a scripture look-up race for an enjoyable, educational picnic activity. Divide all participants into several teams of an equal number of players. Each team will line up behind a starting line with the first player of each team holding a Bible. At the start of the race, the first person will run to a pre-determined spot and back again, still holding the Bible. When the player approaches the next team member, a coordinator will tell him a Bible verse to look up. The player must find the verse and show the coordinator before handing the Bible off to the next player to race. The first team to have all players run the course and find the Bible verses wins the game.
Sack Race
You probably have fond childhood memories of competing in a traditional sack race, whether at a school field day event or at another social gathering. Divide up all players into teams of an equal number of participants. Each team will have an empty potato sack. The first player of each team will wait behind a starting line with the sack on the ground in front of him. When given the command, each first player will hop into his own sack and begin jumping to a pre-determined turn around point. The player will then turn around, while still in his sack, and hop back down to the start line, where he will hand off his sack to the next team player. The team with all members to complete the relay first wins the sack race.
Balloon Race
This game will be played with couples from the same team. Divide players into teams of even, equal numbers. Give each team a partially inflated balloon. The first couple to play from each team will hold the balloon between each of their heads and run to a pre-determined spot and back again to the starting line to hand off the balloon to the next two players in line. As an added twist, if a couple drops a balloon, instruct them to return 3 feet back in the race. The first team to have all players successfully complete the relay wins.
