Root Beer Float Activities

Everyone loves a cold root beer float. But there is so much more fun you can have with this classic ice cream drink than simply drinking it. Whether you want to learn how to make your own root beer floats or how to play a root beer float-themed game, this treat inspires enjoyable activities for people of all ages.
  1. Make Your Own RBF

    • Root beer floats are fun and easy to make.

Take cups or glasses, one for each person who wants a float, and place them on the counter top. Chilling the glasses in the refrigerator beforehand is a good way to make sure the ice cream stays frozen longer. Place one medium-sized scoop of vanilla ice cream in the bottom of each glass or cup. Next, pour the root beer slowly over the ice cream, being careful not to let it foam over the edge of the glass. Place a straw in each glass (and a spoon if you wish) and enjoy.

    Root Beer Float Guessing Game

    • Guessing jellybean numbers can be specialized for root beer float lovers.

Buy one large bag of root beer-flavored jellybeans and one large bag of cream soda-flavored jellybeans. Jelly Belly is a brand that carries both of these flavors. Before the game begins, take several glasses (ice cream float-style glasses work the best for this) and line them up. Number them using a pen and paper and some tape. Next, count out a random number of jellybeans from your bags (the two flavors should be mixed) and place them in each glass. Make sure to write down how many jellybeans are in each glass. Have each player guess how many jellybeans are in each glass. The player closest to the correct amount for each glass is the winner and gets to eat the root beer float jellybeans.

    Root Beer Float Science Experiement

    • Why does the root beer foam more when added to the ice cream?

Root beer floats aren't just delicious; they can be great teaching tools too. By participating in this fun (and delicious) experiment, you can learn what chemical and physical changes occur to ice cream when it is placed in root beer. First set up two glasses side by side. Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream to the glass on the left and root beer to the glass on the right. Have the participants ready with pen and paper to observe, then fill the glass on the left with root beer and have them write down their observations.

Next add a scoop of ice cream to the glass on the right. Have the participants jot down the differences here. They will note that adding root beer to the ice cream causes much more foam. You can now ask some science-related questions. The ice cream and the root beer, when combined, formed foam. Does this constitute a physical or a chemical change? (The answer is chemical.)

    Root Beer Float Cupcakes

    • Root beer-flavored cupcakes are a delicious treat.

If you love root beer floats but are looking for a treat you can eat, try making root beer float-flavored cupcakes. Mix the following ingredients into a bowl: 1 can of root beer, 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar, 3/4 cup of sugar, 1/3 cup canola oil, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract, 2 teaspoons root beer extract, 1 1/3 cups of flour, 3/4 teaspoon baking soda and a small pinch of salt.

After thoroughly mixing this in a large bowl, fill cupcake molds about 3/4 to the top with the mix. Bake for 350 degrees Fahrenheit for about 20 minutes. Next, place vanilla frosting on the top and serve the cupcakes with vanilla ice cream.
