Christmas Games to Play in the First Grade

Celebrate the Christmas holidays in your classroom by creating games for your first graders. Children in the first grade will enjoy a break from classwork while getting in the holiday spirit and ready for the winter break. Check with your school administrator first to find out the school's policy on observing religious holidays. Since not all students celebrate Christmas, schools have various ways of ensuring cultural sensitivity. Some may not allow Christmas celebrations, while others may have specific rules about what kinds of Christmas celebrations are allowed, or about giving equal time to winter holidays from other religious and cultural traditions.
  1. Reindeer Landing Practice

    • Draw a large target on a poster board and write point values in each target ring. Mark a standing line about 10 feet from the target and have the children line up at the line. Tell the children they have to help the reindeer learn how to land by tossing them as close as they can to the bull's-eye. Give each player three plastic reindeer to toss at the target. Award a prize to each child who lands a bull's-eye. You can also use brown beanbags as reindeer.

    Christmas Word Scramble

    • Scramble up several Christmas words on a sheet of paper. Use Christmas words such as jingle bells, Santa Claus, reindeer, candy cane, Christmas, wreath, snowman and Christmas tree. Print the scrambled words on a sheet of paper and give one to each child. Give the children five minutes to unscramble as many words as they can. The child who correctly unscrambles the most words wins a prize. If you have a large class, award a prize to the top five children.

    Snowball Race

    • Divide the children into two teams and have them line up at a starting line. Mark another line about 20 feet from the players on the other side of the room. Give the first player in each team line a pair of mittens, a spoon and a polystyrene foam ball. When you say, "Race," the children must put on the mittens and carry the "snowball" (foam ball) on the spoon. Players must race to the other line and back. They will hand the mittens, spoon and ball to the next player in line, who has to do the same thing. The first team to finish the race wins the game. The larger the foam ball, the harder it is to carry on the spoon.

    Wreath Ball Toss

    • Hang a Christmas wreath from the ceiling and mark a standing line about five feet from the wreath. Have the children try to toss plastic, round Christmas ornaments through the wreath. Give each child five ornaments to toss. Award a prize to each child who gets the ornament through the wreath.
