Games for a Third Birthday

When planning your child's third birthday, be sure to plan fun games to keep the little ones busy and entertained. The games add excitement to the party and give the children a chance to burn off some extra energy. With their small attention spans, it is best to keep the games short and simple. Awarding party favors to all game participants will encourage participation in the party games.
  1. Seashell Hunt

    • Fill a sandbox or plastic swimming pool with play sand and several seashells. Seashells are available in bulk online and at many craft stores. Hide the seashells throughout the sand. Give each child a sifting toy and have him dig through the sand to find seashells. He can place the shells in a favor bag to take home as a memento of the party. Allow each child to keep his toy sand sifter as a participation prize for playing the seashell game.

    Animal Walk

    • Print several pictures of animals and tape them to the ground. Write the names of the animals on small slips of paper and place them in a bowl. Play animal-themed music and have the children dance around the pictures. When the music stops, tell each toddler to stand on an animal picture. Draw an animal name from the bowl and the child standing on that animal wins a prize. Keep playing until each child wins a small prize or award each player a prize for participation. You can substitute this game with any party theme, such as princesses, sea creatures or sports.

    Freeze Dance

    • Play music and tell the toddlers to dance around the party area. Explain to them when they music stops, they must freeze and be completely still. Once the music starts again, they can dance away. Allow the young children to play freeze dance for about five minutes or until they get bored. Award the children small party favors for participation.

    Bubbles

    • Take the young children outside and blow some bubbles. Blow the bubbles for the children and have them run around to pop the bubbles. Tell them to try to pop as many bubbles as they can. Award the children bottle of bubbles for participation and let them practice blowing their own bubbles. Teach the young children how to blow small and large bubbles.

    Fishing for Favors

    • Attach a string to a clothespin and tie it around the end of a wooden dowel. Have an adult or older child hide inside a large appliance box. Paint the box blue and tell the children they are going to go "fishing" for party favors. Help each toddler toss the clothespin over the box. The person inside the box will attach a party favor to the clothespin and then give the string a tug. Each toddler pulls their "fishing line" in and keeps the party favor attached to the clothespin.
