Charades Ideas for a Party

Charades has been a favorite party game for generations, but it is easy to bring it up to date. In some versions of charades, players are divided into two teams and each team must make up titles for their rival team to perform and try to guess. However, for a smooth-flowing party atmosphere, the host should make up the titles in advance. It means the host won't get to play, but will ensure the clues are fun, fair and guests have a great time.
  1. News Review

    • Test your guests' awareness of current affairs by saving up real-life headlines from the week leading up to the party for your charades games. Guessers should be able to work out the headline from the individual words, but it should be up to the actor to put it in context for them. Rather than doing the traditional opening gestures of charades such as book, television program or play, the actor has to convey what sort of news item the headline refers to such as politics, celebrity or world news.

    Obsessives

    • For small parties involving close friends, try a game of geek charades. Pick a particular book or film or band that is beloved or at least well-known by everyone at the party. Select quotes from that or those works to be acted out in the game. Appeal to one-up-manship and those who pride themselves in being particularly knowledgeable about the subject by writing a mix of popular and obscure quotes and awarding fewer or more points to the guesser accordingly.

    Comedy Quotes

    • Charades usually produce plenty of giggles anyway, but add to the humor by picking funny quotes from top comedy films for actors to portray. Stick to lines from classic films and characters so that even the non-film enthusiasts in the group will get a chance to guess, but note down the name of the films that the lines come from so you can offer bonus points for those who also guess the film the quotes come from.

    Decade Inspiration

    • Pick a particular decade for inspiration for your charades and choose hit pop songs, TV shows and films from that era. Add in key news events (such as the moon landing if you've chosen the 1960s). Ask your guests to dress in costumes appropriate to the decade beforehand or gather together a selection of appropriate props for guests to pick from when they arrive. Make sure you've got plenty of music from the time to play in the background.
