Ideas for Group Games & Break the Ice Games

Dinner parties and social gatherings can be stressful for the hosts because they want to ensure that all their friends get along and have fun. It is often the case that two groups of friends don't know each other so it is a good idea to have some ice-breaker ideas ready for your party. Group games are ideal because they force strangers to talk to each other, and if you choose the right games you'll create a fun and friendly atmosphere.
  1. Humming Game

    • In this musical game guests should be split into a few groups (depending on numbers) and given cards with well-known tunes on them. Then half of each group has to hum the song in question to the other half and they must try to guess the song; the team that gets the most right wins. You could choose a reward and punishment for the winning and losing team such as alcohol. Make sure you put people who don't know each other on the same teams to force them to mingle.

    Trouser Snake

    • This fun game will make sure that everyone at a party connects -- literally. Split the group into two groups and give each team a ball of string. The first person on each team must pass the string down their trousers or dress and then it must go up the trousers or dress of the next person and so on. The first team to tie the first person's end of string to the last's wins. This game can be good for getting singles together.

    Who Am I?

    • This party game is a great way to get strangers to start talking to each other. Everyone has to write the name of a famous person on a post-it note and stick it on someone else's forehead. People then have to go around talking to others, asking them questions to find out whom the person on their forehead is. It sounds simple but it is a lot of fun and will really create a light mood and prevent anyone from feeling left out.

    Lie Detector

    • Lie Detector is a fun ice-breaker which works equally well with people who are familiar with each other and those who aren't. The object of the game is for each person to think of three interesting stories about themselves, only one of which is true. Each person must tell three stories, and then the others have to ask them questions to work out which one they think is true. You might learn a thing or two about your guests.
