Fun Indoor Birthday Games

When planning a birthday party for a child whose birthday falls during a month that regularly has inclement weather, be sure to plan several indoor games for the children to play. Use your creativity to select games that appeal to children of all ages. Prizes, such as candy, stickers and toys, are the perfect incentives for game participation.
  1. Animal Sound Match

    • Cut pictures of zoo animals (two of each) out of magazines and tape each one on an index card. Mix the cards up and hand each child a card. Have the children start making the sounds of their animals while roaming around the party area looking for their matches. The first two players to find the "animals" making the same sound as them win a prize.

    Garden Scavenger Hunt

    • Purchase small pieces of faux fruit from your local craft store or online. Hide the fruit all around the party area. Give each child a paper sack with her name on it. When you say, "Find that fruit," the children must walk around the play area gathering fruit and placing it in their paper sacks. The player who finds the most pieces of fruit wins a small prize.

    Hat and Scarf Relay Race

    • Divide the children into two teams and have each team line up single-file. Place a chair in front of the first player in each team line and put a coat, hat, scarf and gloves on it. When you say, "Go," the first player in each line must put on the coat, hat, scarf and gloves. He must run around his team and back to the front of the line. He has to take off the clothes and accessories to hand them to the next player in line, who must do the same thing. The first team to have all its players complete the relay wins the game.

    Guess the Smells

    • Use empty, clean baby food jars to fill with different items, such as coffee beans, parmesan cheese, liquid soap, a flower and chocolate. Wrap the jars in black electrical tape and poke a hole in the lid so players cannot see what is inside the jar. Have the players smell each jar and guess the item inside. The player who guesses the most items correctly wins a prize.
