Games With Flashlights

Young people commonly play flashlight games during sleepovers, nights at camp or overnight school trips. Some can be enjoyable to use as icebreakers, while other flashlight games are simply a twist on classic children's games like tag or hide-and-seek.
  1. Flashlight Tag

    • Flashlight tag is a version of tag you can play at night outside or in a home with enough room for movement. The objective is for the person labeled "It" to tag someone with a flashlight by shining the light on him and calling his name. You can play either by handing the tagged person the flashlight and having him be the new "It," thus starting the game over, or by tagging all players and sending them to a "jail" or home base. For the latter way of playing, the last person standing will be the winner. The flashlight must remain on the entire time.

    Know Your Neighbor

    • This is a good icebreaker at parties or for new people at camp. One person is designated "It." The others sit around in a circle and "It" will choose a player at random, shine the flashlight at her, and ask, "Who are your neighbors?" If a player cannot answer the names of her surrounding neighbors, she becomes the new "It." If she is able to answer correctly, "It" must ask, "How is _____?" and name a player. If the answer is "OK," all of the players remain seated and "It" challenges another person. If the answer is "not so good," everyone must get up and change seats quickly. When this happens, "It" must try to snag someone's seat before that person sits down, making that person the new "It."

    Scavenger Hunt

    • A scavenger hunt can be done in the dark as an extra challenge. Players simply use flashlights to read their item lists and to search for hidden items.

    Guess My Shape

    • One person uses the flashlight to draw a shape, letter or number on the ceiling (if inside) or on the ground (if standing outside) while the other players try to guess it. The first to guess correctly gets handed the flashlight.
