How to Use the Newspaper for a Scavenger Hunt

A scavenger hunt using a newspaper can be a lot of fun. The trick is to get enough newspapers from one day in order to plan out the hunt, then provide a paper to each person who is participating, along with a clue list. By calling out certain articles and headlines, you can make a brain-teasing scavenger hunt that will incorporate reading, searching and clue gathering.

  1. How To Use A Newspaper In A Scavenger Hunt

    • 1

Use local newspapers when creating your clue list. Local newspapers are most likely to have area locations written in them, so you can create a clue such as "Go to page 2B and check out the first location in the second headline." Something along those lines will tell the participant to go looking in the area that is written in a headline, and will save you the time from having to describe the location.

    • 2

Pick up the papers well ahead of the scavenger hunt. It will be too difficult to pick up the papers the day of the event and try to decipher clues out of the text written inside the papers. Give yourself time to come up with creative clues by getting the papers a few days, or even a week ahead of time. This way, you'll be able to go through the papers and write a clue list easily and clearly while thinking of creative, fun ways to hide your items on your scavenger hunt.

    • 3

Be creative with the clues. If there are different words you want to mash together from different headlines, write those out. A clue could be "The second item on the scavenger hunt list will be where the second word is from the first article headline on page 3a is, and the third word on the second article headline on page 4b." Each of your clues will be tailored to the newspaper that you use, so you will be able to create something unique and fun for your participants to use.
