Indoor Toddler Games

Indoor toddler games can be both fun and educational. Although toddlers are not ready for most board games, little ones can follow simple verbal instructions given by adults. When the weather is not welcoming outside, plan a few indoor toddler games to play. Awarding small prizes to a toddler is a nice trick to keep a young child's interest and encourage him to learn and play other games.
  1. Quiet Mouse Game

    • The only thing you will need for this game is music. Encourage your toddlers to use their imaginations and explain that while the music is playing, they will act like cats. Turn on the music and let them practice crawling around, meowing, and stretching like cats. Tell the toddlers that when the music stops they must be quiet and as still as mice. Any player making a noise or moving when the music stops is out of the game. Keep playing until only one player remains.

    Animal Charades

    • Animal charades is another wonderful game for toddlers that let's them use their bodies and their imaginations. Ask the children to think about their favorite animals. Have all toddlers sit in a circle and select one person to go first. Tell that player to stand in the middle of the circle and act out his favorite animal. The first toddler to guess what animal he is acting out gets to go next. Encourage each child to think of a different animal.

    Candy Treasure Hunt

    • For another fun indoor game, hide several pieces of toddler-friendly, wrapped candy and give each toddler a paper cup. Write each child's name on the paper cup. When you say, "go," the children run around and hunt for the hidden candy. Your role is to make sure each toddler gets the same amount of candy.

    Cold or Hot Prizes

    • If you are playing indoors with a group of toddlers, purchase ahead of time small prizes for each child, such as coloring books and crayons, plush animals, candy or small toys. Hide one prize somewhere indoors and select one toddler to go first. As the toddler walks around looking for the prize, you say "hot" or "cold." If the toddler is getting closer to the prize, say "hot" and if he is getting further away, say "cold." The only two words you can say while he is looking are "hot" or "cold." Keep playing until the toddler finds his prize. Repeat the game until all of the toddlers have found a toy.
