Guess Resolutions
This game, mentioned on the Holiday Spot website, is best for kids, but can be played by adults too. Before the clock strikes midnight, everyone playing must have made at least two New Year's resolutions. These resolutions can be pretty simple, such as 'do household chores on a regular basis'. Each player writes his two resolutions down on a strip of paper and each strip is placed in a hat or other container. After midnight, each strip is removed from the hat and the resolutions read, one by one. The other players then try to guess which resolution belongs to which individual.
New Year Drawing
The game of Win, Lose or Draw is pretty simple and well known, but as described by the New Year Festival website, you can put a New Year's twist on this party staple. Before play, go through a bunch of magazines or newspapers, cutting out headlines that describe newsworthy personalities and events from the past year. These snippets are then put into a hat or other container. To play the game, divide everyone into teams of two. Each team takes turns to elect an artist to pick a headline from the hat. The artist then has to draw the event or personality from the headline on a piece of sketch paper, while her teammate tries to guess what's being drawn. Use a stopwatch or egg-timer to time each round. The following round, the players swap over, so each team member has a chance to draw. Whichever team guesses the most headlines, within the time limit, wins the game.
Sliding Puzzles
Simple online computer games are useful for holding the kids' attention while you prepare dinner or entertain guests. You can keep the celebratory spirit by finding games which are themed around New Year, such as the sliding puzzle games found on the ProProfs website. These games depict a Happy New Year scene, featuring streamers and the number of the year in big letters. Players use their mouse to slide the pieces of the scene into the right order, to complete the puzzle.
