Dump Truck Relay
Children can compete in a dump truck relay race, as suggested by Birthday in a Box. Crumple sheets of newspaper into balls to make rocks. Divide children into teams and form each team into a line. Pile 30 to 60 newspaper rocks beside each team, and place two empty boxes at the opposite end of the playing field. On a given signal, the players take turns loading toy dump trucks with newspaper rocks, pushing them over to the box and unloading the rocks. The first team to transport all of their rocks to the box wins the game.
Traditional Games
Re-invent traditional games by giving them a truck theme. Play "Red Light, Green Light" by having children push toy trucks toward the person who is It. Turn a game of "Duck, Duck, Goose" into "Beep, Beep, Honk." Children can run or push trucks around the circle. Build an obstacle course so children can push trucks through a cardboard box tunnel, around a wading pool lake or through a sandbox quicksand pit.
Dirt Pudding
Children can help make a tasty treat, as suggested by Cooks.com. Purchase one small toy dump truck for each child. Wash and dry the trucks before beginning. Mix instant chocolate pudding and 2 cups whipped topping, and then pour one serving into each truck. For each child, place three or four sandwich cookies in a sealed plastic bag. Allow the children to drive the trucks back and forth over the bag to crush the cookies. Pour the crushed cookies into the bed of the dump truck. Top with a gummy worm and refrigerate for a few minutes. Rinse out the trucks, and let children play with them before sending the trucks home as party favors.
Box Trucks
Recycle small cardboard boxes and turn them into trucks, as recommended by Highlights Kids. Stuff one small box and one slightly larger box with newspaper and tape the boxes closed. Wrap the boxes with colored construction paper. Glue the boxes together to make the truck's cab and trailer. Hold the boxes together with rubber bands until the glue dries. Cut a black coffee stirrer in half and glue the pieces to the top of the cap for exhaust pipes. Add wheels, headlights and windows made from construction paper. Push the truck on the floor to take it for a drive.
