Fun Ice Breaker Games

In many situations, different groups of people are new to each other. These settings can include corporate meetings, college dorms, classrooms, church youth groups, or cocktail parties. Because it is difficult for strangers to initiate conversations with each other, sometimes ice breaker games are necessary. By planning a few get-to-know-you activities, an event can move from awkward to fun in a matter of minutes.
  1. Truths and a Lie

    • Distribute sheets of paper to each guest. Have the guests write down three statements about themselves--two should be truths and one should be a lie. Have the group ask "yes" or "no" questions to determine which of the three statements is a lie.

    Three Is a Magic Number

    • Have the group break into pairs. Each pair of guests must discover three unusual facts that they have in common. (Be sure to specify that hair or clothing color, gender, and age are not allowed in order to get to more unusual responses.) After they have time to discuss, they share the commonalities with the rest of the group.

    Famous Pairs

    • This works for an even number of guests. Using index cards and a marker, create cards that can be attached to each guest&'s back with a pin or piece of tape. The cards should be created with pairs in mind. For example, one card could say "peanut butter" and the other card "jelly." After all guests have a card attached (without looking at it first) they should mill around, asking each other "yes" or "no" questions until they find the person they are paired with. Possible pairs include baseball and glove; flower and garden; or beach and ball.

    Beach Ball Questions

    • Purchase an inexpensive beach ball at a dollar or discount store. Using a marker, write different "get to know you" questions on each of the stripes. During the event, have guests toss the beach ball around the group. Guests must answer the question that one of their hands is touching as they catch the ball. Continue until all have answered one or more questions.

      Possible questions to write include:

      1.Where were you born?
      2. Who is your favorite actor?
      3. What is your favorite color?
      4. Who are the members of your family?
      5. What is your favorite food?
      6. What was the best vacation you ever took?

    Pin Your Birthtown

    • Hang a map of the world on the wall. Give each guest a pin and have them place the pin on the city or town where they were born. They should share one thing that they like about their hometowns.

    Toilet Paper Mummy

    • Distribute rolls of toilet paper to pairs of guests. The first guest to completely cover his or her partner with toilet paper wins.
