Rules for Pin the Tail on the Donkey

Pin the Tail on the Donkey is an old party classic. It can be played by any number of players and always ensures laughs and fun among the players. Pin the Tail on the Donkey can either be made or purchased, and the game can be tailored to the theme of your party.
  1. Game Components

    • In the game, the most essential component is the picture of a donkey. You can find printable pictures online or can purchase one at a party store. Others opt to make their own donkey on poster board. Be sure to find one or make one that has no tail. You'll also need a fake donkey tail, pins or tape, and a blindfold. You may make a donkey tail or print one off the internet. Some people use a pushpin on the end of the tail, so that when the child attempts to pin it to the donkey poster, it sticks. This could be dangerous for young children, so double-sided tape can be a more suitable and safe option.

    Game Play Rules

    • With the donkey placed on the wall securely, the players stand in a line a few feet away. One by one, blindfold the children and give them the tail to pin on the donkey in the appropriate place. When the child is blindfolded, spin her around three times and point her in the direction of the donkey. Mark the spot with the child's name where she places the tail. She can now take off her blindfold.

The child cannot feel around the donkey poster before placing the tail. She must make only one contact to the wall. The child also cannot peak below their blindfold. Also, other children must not help the blindfolded player along.

    Player Requirements

    • Any age child can play this game as long as he is able to reach the picture of the donkey on the wall without struggling. Ideally, the game is played with a minimum of four players, but can be played with only two or three. The number of possible players is unlimited.

    Rules for winning

    • The game ends once all the children have had a chance to pin the tail on the donkey. The child who came the closest wins the game. If two children are tied for closest, they can be blindfolded again and asked to pin the tail on the donkey once more. Again, the child who comes the closest is the winner.

    Variations

    • Pin the Tail on the Donkey can be played in a variety of different ways. You can use different animals and tails, or other objects. For example, have children pin a star to the top of a Christmas tree for a holiday party. Or you can have children pin the hat on a witch for a Halloween party. The rules remain the same for any variation.
