Bar Scavenger Hunt Ideas

Although it may seem like running a bar just involves keeping patrons’ drinks filled, there’s a lot more to creating a loyal bar crowd. Offering activities outside of just pulling up a stool and gazing at a television can lead to a reputation for fun and excitement, where your regulars will keep coming to check out your next activity. Get regulars and new customers involved in a group activity such as a scavenger hunt to really bring out their thirst.
  1. Lots of Labels

    • Just as each beer is crafted to have a range of different flavors and scents, the labels on beer bottles are also custom-designed to evoke different emotions and feelings. For your next club or group scavenger hunt, let the focus on beer bottle labels be your goal. Teams can compete to compile the largest collection of different labels, from microbrews to national favorites to local specialties. If time allows, teams can soak off the labels or use a small razor to free them from the glass and press them into a mini photo album or folder. Otherwise, a tote bag or backpack may collect and store the bottles before judging. Participants can win prizes for having the largest collection of labels, the most unique label, the most local labels and the neatest label removal technique.

    Custom Glassware

    • To keep with the bar theme and offer an added bonus of providing a take-home gift at the end of the scavenger hunt, look to your cabinets as inspiration. Assign each scavenger hunt group a style of bar glassware, such as martini, hurricane, snifter and thistle (these can also be their team names). Set a goal for team members to locate this style of glassware (lock up yours first), then customize a glass for each team member using craft supplies such as glitter, stick-on gems, paint and ribbon. Glasses may usually be found everywhere from thrift stores to antique shops to restaurant supply companies; choose barware that won’t be too difficult to “scavenge.” As groups return with their crafted finds, bar staff can judge the best looking, most creative and coolest glasses, offering free drinks as prizes.

    Beermats

    • Beermats, also known as coasters, come in an endless array of styles, shapes, sizes and colors. Chances are, the ones you use at your own bar are quite different than even your neighbor, just a storefront away. Consider banding together with other bars in your area, such as your block or square, and creating a beermat scavenger hunt. Participants move from bar to bar, enjoying a drink (and possibly a snack) at each place, collecting their drink and beer coaster from each location. At the end of the designated amount of time, the team with the most beermats from different establishments wins a price. This encourages people to check out new bars and creates a sense of community between bar owners and staff. You can even sell pre-printed t-shirts, emblazoned on the back with the beermats, before the hunt begins so participants know who is involved with the game as they play.
