Pick out your murder mystery game. Search online for a murder mystery game kit from creators such as Freeform Games or Murder Mystery Games Ltd. Choose a game appropriate for your party, based on the age group, number of players, space needed, etc. Order your game early enough to give you plenty of time to thoroughly read the rules and understand the game.
Send out your invitations. Include information about the party, such as date and time, and also include information about the game itself. Send the invites about a month in advance to give your guests enough time to make their decision. Also include an RSVP date that gives you enough time to finish planning the party.
Cast your confirmed guests as characters in the game. If you don't have enough characters because more guests plan to attend than you anticipated, either make new characters or purchase a larger game. About two weeks before the day of your party, send character information to each assigned character. Do not give your party guests specific items, such as money or item cards, until the day of the party. Encourage your guests to get into character by dressing and acting their parts. If possible, leave a couple of characters uncast so you have some flexibility if extra guests show up to your party.
Stuff a separate evelope for each of your characters a few days before the party. Each person should have his own envelope stuffed with personalzied effects for his character. Write the name of the character on the front of the envelope.
Find a co-host or referee for the party to help you keep track of the rules and ensure that they are followed. The referee should not be a party guest that you have already cast in the murder mystery. Review the rules with the co-host or referee so that you know and understand all of the rules prior to the party.
On the day of the party, follow the specific instructions included in your murder mystery game and enjoy solving the mystery with your guests.
