Over the Hill Party Game Ideas

Some people avoid their 40th birthday like the plague, even going so far as refusing to recognize the occasion entirely. Others welcome the distinguished age with grace and humility. Regardless, you can make the next "Over the Hill" celebration more fun with some clever variations of popular party games.
  1. Pin the Toupee on the Bald Guy

    • Find a picture of a bald man on the Internet and then get an old toupee. Blow up the picture and print it onto a poster. Pin the poster on the wall and blindfold the youngest person in the room. Give the blindfolded person the toupee with a thumbtack, spin him in a circle a few times and issue the challenge to pin the toupee on the bald guy. Give each party attendee a turn, working your way up to the oldest person in the room. Have a few spotters stand around the person pinning the toupee to ensure that no one gets too dizzy and falls.

    Over the Hill Relay Race

    • Split your party attendees into two teams. Head outside and create two lanes that are 5 feet wide and 30 feet long. Use string on stakes planted in the ground to outline the lanes. Position each of the teams at the end of a lane. Each team member will move as quickly as possible to the end of the lane and back, and then tag the next teammate, who will do the same. However, unlike a normal relay race, each competitor must run the relay while using crutches, canes, wheelchairs and walkers. Declare that each competitor must use the device as intended. For instance, a competitor assigned the wheelchair cannot push it down the lane. Competitors can choose their props, but make sure that each team uses each type of prop at least one time. When all members of one team finish, the race is over.

    Kick the Bucket

    • This simple party game plays off the not-so-subtle notion that the person having the birthday is now much closer to "kicking the bucket." Find a small plastic bucket and set it upside on the ground. Place a string on the ground in front of the bucket to mark its location. Divide the party-goers into two teams. Have each team member kick the bucket as far as possible. Ensure that each member is physically capable of such activity and is wearing the proper footwear to avoid injury. Measure how far the bucket was kicked by walking heel-to-toe to its resting location. Record the number of steps and replace the bucket behind the string for the next competitor. After everyone has "kicked the bucket," add the scores together for each team and award the winning team a trophy: the bucket filled with milk of magnesia and vitamins.
