Group Party Game Ideas

If your party starts lagging and needs a little focus, consider playing group games. Playing party-appropriate group games may help bring your party out of the doldrums of boredom and make it an event to remember. Keep the party guests in mind before playing a game in order to play a game appropriate for the age group.
  1. Egg Splat

    • This game should only be played outdoors as it will be incredibly messy. Divide your party into groups. Aim for at least four groups of four but go higher or lower as party size dictates. Buy several dozen eggs and boil half and leave the rest raw. Place half hard-boiled eggs and half raw eggs into a basket. There should be enough raw and hard-boiled eggs for each member of the team. Players on each team will attempt to find the hard-boiled eggs. Each teammate should choose an egg they think is hard-boiled and then smash it on their head. Teams get a point for each hard-boiled egg they find. The team with the most points after three rounds wins. Give everyone a chance to clean up after every round, as egg yolk will be incredibly sticky and annoying to the players.

    Hi Larry

    • Find a large free area and have everyone sit in a circle. You can be the starting player. Turn to your left and say "Hi Larry" to the player next to you. They have to say "What Larry?" Your response should then be "Tell Larry." This player then turns to their left and says "Hi Larry" to the player next to them. The process then continues around the circle. When a player makes a mistake, their name will change from "Larry" to "One Dot." This indicates that they have made one mistake. Stop the game at this point and let everyone know they are "One Dot." This means a player must change the name accordingly. For example, a player would say "Hi One Dot" to a "One Dot" player. They would also say "Tell One Dot" if the next player was also a "One Dot." If a player makes a second mistake, they are "Two Dot" and the name should be changed accordingly. Three mistakes and you're out. Go all the way to the final player, who should win a small prize.

    Name That Tune

    • "Name that Tune" was a popular game show in the '80s that had players guessing a song based on just a few notes from that song. Adapt this for your party. It can be appropriate for any age group, but keep in mind the age group and try to pick age-appropriate music. You should have some music that will challenge your group. Split your party into groups of at least four. Bring a CD player or iPod to the center of the room and play a few bars of music. Give each team a sign on a stick. They will hold up the sign if they think they know the song. Have a spotter watching to see which sign goes up first. If the team guesses it right, they win a point. If they don't guess it, other teams get a chance. Tally up the points at the end of the game and reward the winning team with small prizes.
