Birthday Party Games for Kids 3-8

Games are as much a part of children's birthday parties as cake and ice cream. No children's birthday party would be the same without fun and exciting games. Challenge children to classic party games such as "Pin the Tail on the Donkey" and "Musical Chairs," or play other popular games. Invite your child's friends to play games and win prizes for birthday party memories that last a lifetime.
  1. Bring Me...

    • In this game, organize children to sit in an area while they listen for things to look for. Designate an adult to call out objects that children find and bring back to the announcer. The announcer can say, for example, "bring me a father's belt." Request items such as a mother's lipstick, a cupcake, a shoe and a watch. Give a prize to the first child who returns the requested item. Make sure the number of prizes matches the number of different items the announcer requests. Pair younger kids with an adult who can help them look for items.

    Duck, Duck, Goose

    • Play the classic game Duck, Duck, Goose. Have the children sit in a circle with their legs crossed. Choose one child to go around the circle tapping each child on the head while she says, "duck." When she taps someone on the head and says, "goose" instead, that child must stand and chase her around the circle. If the child who tapped him is able to get around the circle and sit in the goose's place before being tagged, she is safe. If not, she is out, and he gets to pick a new goose. Continue the game until only one child is left. Give that winner a prize.

    Pop the Balloon Relay

    • Prepare one balloon per child. Divide kids into two, equal-sized teams. Ask each team to form a single-file line on one end of the room. Ask two adults (one for each team) to stand side-by-side at the other end of the room. The adults and the children should be facing each other, about eight to 10 feet apart. Give each adult a chair and half of the balloons. Ask each adult to hold the first balloon in place on the chair's seat. The first child from each team runs as fast as they can toward the chair. They must pop the balloon by sitting on it, then run as fast as they can back to the team. The next person in line takes off running to pop the next balloon. The first team to have all of its members pop a balloon wins. Award a prize to each child on the winning team. Adults can help younger children by carrying them and helping them to sit on the balloon.
