Ideas for Scavenger Hunt Items

Scavenger hunts have been a staple of children's birthday parties for generations. The general idea of a scavenger hunt is that teams compete to collect items on a list and be the first to bring them back to Party Central. These days, even grown-ups are adapting the classic scavenger hunt by tailoring the lists to adult interests, and there are ideas available to suit just about any occasion imaginable.
  1. Photo Scavenger Hunt

    • In these days of digital cameras and camera phones, it's no longer necessary to actually collect something. Instead, have the teams scatter to photograph a list full of enormous and outrageous things. You could send them to the zoo to collect the most elusive animals on a photo safari, or to the mall to "bring" you the most expensive item from each store. Head downtown to accumulate the tallest building, the oldest building, the biggest fountain and the ugliest gargoyle.

    Bachelor/Bachelorette Parties

    • Scavenger hunts adapt well to bachelor and bachelorette parties. Your lists should include things relevant to the couple, such as a penny imprinted with the number of the year they met and a menu from their favorite restaurant. Have the hunters collect the business cards of married strangers with marital advice written on the backs, or compete to bring back the largest gag wedding gift. You can also include more adult items on your list for these searches, such as "collect underpants from a stranger" or "find an illustrated copy of the Kama Sutra."

    Charity Hunt

    • Have fun and benefit your favorite charity besides by using your scavenger hunt to collect needed items which you will then donate. Assemble pet food, brushes, blankets, towels and pet toys for an animal shelter. Food banks always need cold cereals, pasta, and canned fruits and vegetables; homeless shelters need blankets, pillows, and personal care items such as toothpaste, deodorant, razors and shampoo. If your party is during the holiday season, "adopt" a family and send your scavenger hunt teams out for children's gifts, household supplies like toilet paper and laundry detergent, and food for the holiday feast.

    Tailor-Made Hunt

    • If you have a wild group of friends, tailor your hunt list especially for them. Include item descriptions that can be interpreted in more than one way, and send the players off with the admonition to be as creative as they can be. For example, if the word "ruler" is on the list they could bring back a yardstick or a picture of Queen Elizabeth. Try listing things like dough, polish, cane and buck to see what you end up with- give extra points for the most original interpretations.
