What Are Some Good Ideas for a Video Scavenger Hunt?

Scavenger hunts are perfect party activities as they get everyone excited and involved. The traditional game of collecting items off a list gets old, though, once you reach your teen years. Instead, tweak the old classic and make it into a video scavenger hunt that sends people all over town in search of odd sights and sounds. Using a video camera makes the game more mature in nature lending it to be used at teenage and adult parties. Video scavenger hunts can involve a wide variety of things that must be caught on camera and will be sure to garner some laughter once you watch the tapes.
  1. Footage of Items

    • Capture footage of various landmarks, storefronts, neighborhoods and scenarios in your town. Scenarios can include things such as "someone walking in a park." Something like this is general, so it can be found at most any park at various times. It's a matter of capturing the footage at the right place right time for this video scavenger hunt scenario.

    Interviews

    • Make your groups interview people on camera. Include both specific people (a police officer, specific store employee, child) and odd, awkward or embarrassing questions. The specific people will force players to go to places where they would find such an individual. The odd questions will make them feel awkward having to ask the designated question and likely make for some funny reactions to capture on tape.

    Action Items

    • Put some action-oriented tasks on the list such as buying 10 cents of gas, singing to a rubber ducky and helping an elderly person carry their groceries to the car. Put a few easy tasks on the list along with more challenging or near impossible tasks such as capture footage of a dog chasing a cat chasing a mouse running away with a piece of cheese. Something along those lines can be included for mere amusement and to see who will attempt to make it all happen.

    Points System

    • As you develop your list of things to be filmed attach a points value for each item. This is how you can keep score and determine a winning team. Items that are more difficult to achieve or catch on camera should be assigned more points, and those that are common (such as "drive through a fast food joint and order nothing") should have fewer points assigned to them. This will encourage teams to try to find or do the more challenging tasks and thus collect some humorous footage.

    Team Personalities

    • Give the game an additional twist by having teams take on a personality. This "personality" is something they have to dress-up as or act like as they complete all their tasks. If a group was assigned a pirate personality, they'd have to say "argh, ay matey" every time they talked to someone during filming. Some other ideas include clowns with noses and horns and tourists, all with fake accents and numerous questions.
