Relay Races
Kids and adults can appreciate a good relay race. Choose the standard race, or make it more interesting with a three-legged race, potato sack race or a race while balancing an egg on a spoon. There are many ways to hold a race, and everyone can usually get involved.
Horseshoes
Set up a horeshoe pit in the yard to play at your party. Play as individuals or teams. Horseshoes are a fun way to compete with friends and family, but it's really a game for adults. If you have older children at the party, have them keep score (at a safe distance of course).
Volleyball
Play volleyball at your outdoor party. Set up a net and play in small groups or large teams. No matter how many guests you have at your party, you can play volleyball. The game is a great icebreaker, especially if many people are just becoming acquainted.
Scavenger Hunt
Hold a scavenger hunt for your guests with a prize for the winner. Give each guest the same list of items, and hide several of each item throughout the yard. Once all of the objects have been found, the winner is the person with the most complete collection. If your party has a theme, choose items that fit the theme for even more fun.
Blind Guide
Pair your guests up into teams of two. Blindfold one member from each team and have her find an object in the yard guided only by the verbal directions from her teammate. The teammate who shouts out directions must stay behind a certain boundary and use only directional words like "forward," "back," "left" or "right." The first team to reach the object and bring it back is the winner.
