Finish the Lyric
"Finish the Lyric" puts a holiday spin on the game show, "Don't Forget the Lyrics." Before the game, write popular holiday song lyrics on a stack of cards. Leave one word blank from the line of each song. For easy reference, the missing word should appear in parentheses.
Divide the guests into two teams. A player from one team chooses a card and reads aloud the first set of lyrics. Use the word "blank" in place of the missing word (or words, for a more challenging game). The person with the card selects a player from the opposing team to guess the missing word. Give a team a point for each correct answer. After playing a pre-determined number of rounds, the team with the most points at the end of the game wins.
Family Trivia
This game is based on "Jeopardy." This family trivia game is for participants who were present during previous holiday gatherings. Before the event, create cue cards with questions that relate to dates, happenings and attendees during previous parties. Assign point values to a question and place it in the proper category. Use a chalkboard, whiteboard or an easel with flip paper to keep score.
Read a question and call on the player who raises her hand first. Players must respond in the form of a question, just as in "Jeopardy," otherwise they are penalized the clue's point value. The participant with the most points at the end of the game wins.
Movie and TV Trivia
This game also is based on "Jeopardy." Rresearch holiday-related films and television specials. Categorize each entry by genre (such as comedy or drama), premise, stars, directors and famous lines or quotations.
Include music as a category. For example, the clue answering the question "What is 'Halloween?'" could read, "John Carpenter composed the chilling theme to this 1978 film about a madman who, rather than go trick-or-treating, goes on a terror spree." The clue answering the question "What is 'Linus and Lucy?'" may read, "This inescapable piano-driven jazz tune from 'A Charlie Brown Christmas' bears the name of two Peanuts characters."
Assign a point for each correct answer. The player with the most points at the end of the game wins.
Name That Tune
For "Name That Tune," participants divide into two teams. Players take turns selecting cards. Each card contains the name of a holiday song. The player has to hum the tune for her fellow team members. A team has 30 seconds to guess the song's name. The team earns a point for a correct response. After playing a pre-determined number of rounds, the team with the most points wins.
