Children's Yard Games

Children love playing games outdoors. Maybe your kids are getting bored with the classic favorites like Freeze Tag and Duck, Duck Goose. Do you need to entertain a group of children in your yard? Try some of these fun games and your backyard may become the neighborhood favorite.
  1. Amoeba Tag

    • In Amoeba tag, two children start as "it." With hands joined, the two chase the other children. Once a child is caught, she must also join hands. After four or more are joined as "it," they may split into groups. However, "it" can only be split into even numbered groups. The game continues until everyone has been caught.

    Jailbreak (Freedom)

    • Jailbreak begins with children split into two teams. One team begins as the "cops" and the other as the "criminals." When a member of the cop team captures a criminal, he takes him to a designated area that is called "jail." A free member of the criminal team can free their teammate by tagging him and yelling "freedom." However, if the child trying to free his team member is caught, he must also go to jail. The teams switch roles once every criminal is captured.

    Flashlight Tag

    • This game is a variation of tag and hide and seek played at night. One child begins the game as "it" while the other children find a dark hiding spot. After "it" has counted to 60 out loud, she turns on the flashlight and begins looking for those hiding. When she spots someone with her flashlight, she must be able to identify him by yelling his name. If she yells the correct name, the player freezes and is given the flashlight. He is now it. While hiding, children can move around and change places, which makes this game more challenging.

    Broom Hockey

    • If you are playing games with children in the yard, you may not want to play one that requires a ball that might break windows. Broom hockey is a fun way to play a sport in a different and funny way. Children are divided into two teams. Keep the teams small and make substitutions so that everyone has a chance to play. Each team has a goal made of a box or bucket and each player has a broom. The object of the game is to score by rolling a rubber ball into the goal. Before the game, decide on a time limit. The game ends once the limit has been reached and the team with the highest score wins.

    Tied in Knots

    • The game begins with everyone standing in a circle. Each child must join hands with two other children. No player can be holding the same person's hands in both of his. At this point, challenge the group to untie themselves into a circle. The players may have to go under and over others to get untangled. It is best to keep the groups limited to eight or fewer participants.
