Greek Mythology Decorations

The ancient Greeks were nothing if not stylish, and their mythology includes some of the most important stories in Western literature. That makes them excellent theme material for a costume parties. You can evoke the look and feel of Greek mythology very easily: a sense of creativity and a few supplies at your local arts and crafts stores are all you require.
  1. Marble and Ivy

    • Evoking Greek mythology starts with Greek architecture, and that means lots of marble columns. If you have the means, look for papier mache columns from party stores or theater prop companies. Otherwise, check for paper images of columns that you can place on the walls. If you can, see if you can find some plaster busts of Greek characters or replica urns; they can be found at theater prop companies or museum stores if you have a little extra cash. You can accentuate the marble with fake ivy purchased at arts and crafts stores. The ivy works well even if you don't have the time or resources to spend on faux marble; group some around place settings or hang it on the walls to give the area a sense of hallowed antiquity.

    Colors and Fabrics

    • Draping rolls of fabric on your furniture can lend the area a sense of a Greek temple. You can purchase them at any fabric store, or if you're on a budget, use paper streamers from party shops. White, gold and purple colors most readily invoke a Greek atmosphere. If you want something more specifically mythological, pattern the colors to match those of various Greek gods. For example, as god of the sea, Poseidon could be represented by green and blue, while Apollo, the god of light, could use yellow and sky blue colors.

    Gods and Monsters

    • The core of Greek mythology lies in the gods of Mount Olympus and monsters like the Medusa and the Minotaur who challenged mortal heroes. Put up images of them around your party area. You can look for them at party stores or education supply companies, or simply download them from the Internet, print them out on your printer, then cut them out and place them on walls. You can do similar things with actual props. Wine, for example, represents the god Dionysus, while a model of a bull's head can represent the Minotaur. Research specific Greek myths before you decide what props to use; they can give you great ideas and allow you to further tailor your party around a specific myth or story.
