Swimming Party Games

Holding a swimming party means that guests will be making use of your pool throughout the duration of the party. Aside from just allowing guests to swim and cool off, the pool can also be used for different games. Your party-goers can participate in contests, sports and races for added entertainment in the water.
  1. Sports

    • Swimming parties can feature different aquatic sports for guests to participate in. If your pool is big enough, set up two goals on each side and engage in a game of water polo. Setting up a net in the center of the pool can allow your guests to play volleyball in the water. This can be done with a standard volleyball or a large beach ball. Floating basketball nets can also be purchased that will move around the pool as players attempt to score points by throwing or dunking a ball into the net.

    Games

    • If the party has an in-ground pool or a deck around an above-ground pool, party-goers can participate in diving or jumping contests. Appoint three judges from the guests who are not swimming or participating in the game. Next have the competitors take turns performing jumps or dives into the pool. Each judge should award a score based on the creativity of the jump. The highest scoring jumper is the winner.

Another game involves filling several plastic eggs with weights and throwing them to the bottom of the pool. This can also be done with pool toys such as rings or sticks that sink to the bottom of the water. Participants should keep their eyes closed when searching for the toys and be awarded points based on the color of the toys or eggs.

A classic pool game that requires no additional equipment is Marco Polo. One player is "it" and must keep her eyes closed while trying to tag other players. The "it" player can call out "Marco" to which all players must respond "Polo." After tagging another player the "it" player must guess who he tagged, at which point that player is now "it."

    Races

    • Relay races can be played with any object that floats in water. Use fruit such as a watermelon and have players push it across the pool without using their hands to touch the melon. This can also be done with balloons filled with either air or water.

Another race is a form of the game "Red Light Green Light." Have a person stand at one end of the pool and all other players at the opposite end. When the solo player calls out "green light" the players must swim as fast as possible toward the other end. When the player calls "red light" the players must stop. The first player to make it to the other end of the pool becomes the caller on the next round.
