Swimming Pool Game Ideas

Poolside party games are a wet way to cool off during a hot day. Prior to playing games, make sure all guests are comfortable with swimming and the activity involved. There are a variety of games that can be played for all swimming levels. Being a judge or spectator can be as enjoyable as playing the game.
  1. Relay Games

    • The Dolphin Relay game has the guests divided into equal teams. Each team will one at a time swim the length of the pool and back while pushing a ball with their head or nose. The first team to finish wins.

With The Watermelon Push Relay, each team, one person at a time pushes a watermelon across the pool, not using their feet. The first team to complete the relay wins.

    Group Games

    • To play The Snake Game, one person is designated as "it" and stands in the middle of the pool. All players are on one side of the pool and must swim to the other side without being tagged. If a person is tagged, they hold hands with the other "it" person to form a line. Continue with the remaining group swimming across until all people are tagged.

Ball Tag has one person being "it" and holding the ball. The "it" person throws the ball at another person to make them it. Use the ball instead of tagging to exchange being "it".

To play a game of Joust, have two rafts in the pool with one person on each. Use a noodle as a joust to knock the other person off the raft.

    Poolside Games

    • The Fill the Bottle game requires teams of people, four or six ounce plastic cups, and a 20-ounce bottle. One person from each team will lie holding the bottle on their forehead. Not using hands, the remaining team members will hold a plastic cup in their mouth, run to fill it in a bucket and then run back to dump it into the 20 ounce bottle. The first to fill the bottle wins.

The Sponge Toss game is an attempt to fill a bucket with the most water. Line each team up with spacing of at least 4 feet between. The first person takes a sponge out of a bucket and tosses it to the next person. Keep tossing until the sponge reaches the last person. That person squeezes the sponge into a bucket and runs to the start off the line to start over with a wet sponge. Once the entire line has rotated through as a starter, measure the amount of water in each bucket. The team whose bucket has the most water wins the game.
