Music Trivia Games

Music trivia games are easy and fun, and can increase group involvement and interaction at a party. The games here may help break the tension at any slow party, or liven up an already satisfying gathering. Try to have game participants sit in a circle if possible, to increase group dynamic and eye-to-eye contact.
  1. Billboard Top Songs

    • Visit the Billboard Website, or buy the latest Billboard magazine and get a list of the top 20 songs in a genre of your choice. The aim here is to see who can guess the most songs on the top 20 list. Set a time limit for answers, for example 3 minutes. Go round in a circle. The person who guesses the most in 3 minutes wins the game.

    Alphabetical Listing

    • This is a game to determine who can name a song for each letter of the alphabet. Though quite difficult, the person who gets the most songs wins the game. It may be hard to set a time limit, so take turns in a circle, and break up the alphabet. For example, letters A through M in the first round, then N through Z in the second round. Try vowels, or other alphabetic combinations for a different twist.

Michael Jackson (or other famous artist) Songs

    • This is a fairly easy game. Set a time limit of 3 minutes. The first person to name as many Michael Jackson songs, or another favorite and very popular artist's songs in that time frame wins the game. Take notes of how many songs were named in the given time period to determine the winner.

    Songs with a Dance

    • Try to name as many songs that have a dance attached, along with the artist or group that sang the song. Then, perform the dance while singing the tune; for example, "Vogue" by Madonna. The winner of the game is the one who got the most songs right and had the most amusing dance performance.

    Name that Tune

    • This is a very popular music trivia game. Pick a moment in time or a music era; for example, the disco era or the 80s. Play a 5 to10 second clip of a song, and the first person to name the tune wins the round. Have a set of about twelve songs and take notes of who gets the most songs right. Choose popular songs that are recognizable enough to ensure the game is not too difficult or obscure for people to guess.
