How to Play the Game Stacked Dice

There are so many dice games...it’s hard to know them all. One game you’ve most likely not encountered in your gaming escapades is Stacked Dice. Each player plays with their own set of dice of a different color and tries, round by round, to stack them atop their opponent’s dice to garner points. Sounds easy, right? It can be, if the dice are on your side. Stacked Dice is a surprising fun and intense game of strategy and chance.

Things You'll Need

  • Dice (a set of five for each player in different colors)
  • Four or more players (best with six and up)

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the order of play. Each player will roll one of their dice. The player with the highest roll begins the game of Stacked Dice. Play will then continue to the left and around the table in a clockwise direction.

    • 2

Roll the dice. All players will roll their dice at the same time. The advantage of being first doesn’t come in the throw; it happens after all dice have been rolled.

    • 3

Take stock of the dice. After the dice have been thrown, you should take account of your dice, and everyone else's. You are looking for other players’ dice that match your own. Once you’ve found one, it’s time to act.

    • 4

Stack a die. Starting with the first player, he will select one of his dice and stack it on top of another player’s die of the same value. This will lock both dice from being rolled again, and it is the only way to gain points in the game of Stacked Dice. Make sure when you stack the dice that you keep the face value up.

    • 5

Move to the next player. After the first player has stacked his die, the person to his left will now have a chance to stack a die. He can either stack one of his dice on a single die or on an already stacked pair of dice. Please note that you may only stack dice to a height of four. Once the fourth die is place on a stack, it is locked and no one may place another die on top.

    • 6

Continue around the table, stacking those dice that are able to be stacked, until play returns to the first player.

    • 7

Gather all your own remaining dice (those dice not in a stack) and prepare for the next round.

    • 8

Roll the dice again. All players will roll their dice a second time. Play continues as already described, starting with the first player who will stack a die atop a corresponding single die or stack of dice.

    • 9

Continue to stack and roll (or roll and stack) until one player is no longer able to roll any more dice. At this time, game play stops.

    • 10

Tabulate points. Each player receives points based on the top die in the stacks. Whoever owns the stack (the person whose die is on top) gets points for those dice. Points will vary depending on the stack and is equal to the number of dice times the value. If there are four dice in a stack and the die on top shows a 6, the person with the top die would receive 24 points (4 x 6). Also, if there are three dice in a stack and the die on top shows an ace, the person with the top die would receive 30 points (3 x 10). This is because aces are worth 10 points. Those dice without stacks are worthless.

    • 11

Continue to play until one player scores 200 points for the game. He is declared the winner of Stacked Dice.
