How to Play the Pinata Game

The Pinata Game is a traditional Mexican game that many people enjoy playing at outdoor parties. The Pinata is a cardboard sculpture that is filled with pieces of candy, and the aim is to break it with a stick or bat to allow the candy to spill out. Then there is a mad rush to collect the most candy. The real challenge is that the player who wields the bat is blindfolded and dizzy and the pinata is not stationery.

Instructions

    • 1

Tie the candy-filled pinata to the clothesline rope. Throw one end of the rope over the branch of a tree so that the pinata dangles from one side of the branch, and someone holding the rope on the other side of the branch can raise or lower the pinata by pulling on the rope.

    • 2

Line up the players. If you are playing with a mixed-age group it is fair to allow the smallest and weakest players to go first. Blindfold the first player. Spin the player around several times to disorient his sense of direction.

    • 3

Place the stick or bat in the blindfolded player's hand and point her in the direction of the pinata. Tell her to hit the pinata. Meanwhile, someone is raising and lowering the pinata by pulling on the rope. Let her strike the pinata with the stick 3 times. If the candy does not spill out, the turn passes to the next player in line.

    • 4

Blindfold and spin each player in turn until someone strikes the pinata forcefully enough to break it and the candy spills out. The player who hits the final blow "wins" the Pinata Game and may receive a prize. Every player gets to compete to gather the spilled out candy.
