Huge Characters' Base Speed in Dungeons & Dragons

Movement in the "Dungeons &Dragons" role-playing game is an important aspect of combat. Many players choose to use miniatures and a hexagon play mat to symbolize the combat. Players can choose to move, attack, run away, cast spells, or perform many other actions. Each hexagon on the mat represents 5 feet of movement. Most experienced D&D gamers know that the movement speed of medium sized creatures is 30 feet in a six-second turn. But what about the movement speed of larger creatures?
  1. Base Speed

    • "Dungeons &Dragons" encourages players to spend time interacting with the surroundings and characters that the dungeon master has created. But combat is still a large part of the game play. When you create custom monsters or non-player characters you need to consider movement speed for larger creatures. Huge monsters have a base movement speed of 50 feet per six seconds. If you are using a standard hexagon mat, this means that a huge monster can move 10 hexes per six-second turn.

    Armor

    • Huge humanoids, like giants, can wear suits of armor. This armor makes these creatures more difficult to hit by increasing their armor class. To hit an enemy, characters need to meet or exceed their armor class by rolling a 20-sided die and adding any attack bonuses. Increasing your armor class by one generally reduces your chance of being hit by 5 percent. The trade off is that heavier armor limits your speed. This is as true for huge monsters as it is for players. Giants wearing armor have a movement speed of 30 feet or 6 hexes per six seconds.

    Swimming and Flying

    • The base land speed for huge creatures may be 50 feet, but what if the monsters are airborne or can swim? There are few creatures that are both huge, 16 to 32 feet across or tall, and airborne. Mature dragons are one example of a huge creature that can fly. Huge flying creatures can fly at a speed of 150 feet or 30 hexes per six-second turn. Huge monsters that can swim can swim at a rate of 60 feet or 12 hexes per six-second turn.

    Hustle versus Sprint

    • The base speed of a creature is called its "hustle speed." This is the rate that it moves in a controlled combat situation. Moving your full hustle speed in a round takes your entire turn. You can walk at half that speed and still take a half-action. The walk speed of huge creatures is 25 feet per six seconds. Huge creatures can also run at 75 feet per turn or sprint at a rate of 100 feet per turn. These speeds are modified by any bonuses or penalties at work.
