Use a "Player's Handbook" for the relevant edition of "Dungeons &Dragons." The rules for character statistics vary from edition to edition, so you will need a point of reference for what to include on the sheet. You also can use an official sheet for a point of reference. Walk through the character creation process in the "Player's Handbook." As each statistic is calculated, add it to your character sheet design.
Create a simple sheet layout using a spreadsheet program. If you have Microsoft Office, Excel works fine. Otherwise you can use a free spreadsheet program such as Open Office. Use the columns and rows to create the layout for all the stats and information that you wish to include on the sheet. Use your point of reference but customize it to suit your needs. For instance, if your game does not use certain rules, such as encumbrance, you can safely leave anything pertaining to those rules off your new sheet.
Design a more graphically oriented sheet using a drawing program. Most character sheets tend to be fairly simple in layout, as complexity makes it difficult to find important information quickly. Because of this, a simple drawing program such as Microsoft Paint works fine. The box tool quickly marks areas for filling in information. Using a Paint program may take a little longer than using a spreadsheet, but you will have more freedom with creative layouts and aesthetics.
Write the character information on graphing paper. The printed lines and columns on the paper make it easy to quickly fill in information as it is needed and keep it organized. This method is best if you don't have access to a computer or printer to create a more elaborate design. Players can fill in the headings as well as the actual statistics as they create the new characters for quick character sheets.
