Things You'll Need
Instructions
Purchase a Dungeons &Dragons Player's Handbook (PHB) at a local game store or from an online retailer. Purchase a 20-sided Dungeons &Dragons dice set as well. Read the PHB to become familiar with the rules of Dungeons &Dragons.
Post a note on a bulletin board at your workplace or talk to the staff at a local game store to indicate your interest in joining an existing Dungeons &Dragons group. Contact the host of a Dungeons &Dragons group in your area. Ask the host the average age of the players in the group is to ensure that you will feel comfortable in the group. Find out when game night is and plan to attend.
Create your character with your group after reading about character creation in the PHB and downloading a character creation sheet from Wizards.com. Fill out a blank character sheet deciding upon the race and class of your character. Consider the advantages and weaknesses of playing with a smart character versus one with low ability scores. Before selecting your character, think about whom you are playing against and how you will train your potential character to overcome its weaknesses. Create a name, personality, relationship status and family background for your character.
Show up for game night and play your character against and with the other players in your group. Listen to the Dragon Master (leader of the group) explain the setting and surroundings for your character. Tell the Dragon Master what actions you wish to take or ask a question about your surroundings when it is your turn.
