Instructions for LARP Weapons

LARP, or Live Action Role Playing, is a special type of role playing game in which the players actually "become" their characters. This essentially means that, instead of rolling dice or creating imaginary scenarios, the players actually don the armor, weapons and other accessories that their characters would wear. After doing this, they play out a variety of game scenarios, going so far as to engage in mock combat with each other. However, to avoid chaos, the use of the weaponry follows certain rules of engagement.
  1. Marshals

    • The usage of LARP weapons is overseen by the game marshals. Marshals are somewhat like referees, but since LARP rules involve social aspects as well as combat aspects, marshals can be considered more like the "policemen" of the game. They are considered to be players, but also have the authority to remove other players that they feel are not acting in accordance with the rules of the game. If any combat with LARP weapons begins, there is usually a marshal nearby to dictate whether both players are using their weapons in a legal manner.

    Basic Combat

    • Using weapons in LARP combat is more like the sport of fencing than it is like traditional combat with real weapons. In LARP combat, the objective is to touch your opponent's body rather than strike them, and excessively hard or illegal hits can be cause for disqualification. The simulated damage is based on a trust system. If you make contact with someone, they must say "Hit" or the strike will not count. If they feel that you only made contact with their clothes, they say "Cloth" and the hit does not count. If you feel that you made solid contact with your opponent and they did not take the hit, you should contact a marshal instead of confronting them about it.

    Invalid Hits

    • In addition to the wild swings mentioned above, there are certain illegal target areas on your opponent's body. Against all combatants, these illegal areas are the neck, groin and head. Against female combatants, you are also not allowed to strike them in the breast region. If you make an invalid hit, you are required to stand down and allow your opponent time to recover. If you are hit in an illegal area, you are not required to take the hit.

    Valid Hits

    • A hit that is taken on the arm anywhere from the shoulder down is considered an "arm hit." This includes your hand as long as it is not holding a weapon at the time of contact. Any hit below the waist, except for the groin, is considered a "leg hit." If you get hit on your arm or your leg, you should stop using that limb immediately, as if it were actually cut off. If you are hit directly on the body, or on an arm that has already been "lost," you are considered "dead" unless wearing certain types of body armor.
