How to Make a D&D Battlemat

Dungeons and Dragons is a role-playing game where players create fictional characters in a variety of classes, then work together to move through a dungeon stocked with enemies. In order to play a game, the dungeon master designs the mission, from the dungeon being moved through to the enemies and objectives. Creating erasable battle mats is useful for a dungeon master because it allows you to use the same sheets multiple times over the course of repeated Dungeons and Dragons games.

Instructions

    • 1

Select graph paper with squares just large enough to fit the tokens used for your characters, or draw your own grids on sheets of paper using a pencil and ruler.

    • 2

Insert each graph page into a clear plastic sleeve. Test your dry erase marker to ensure that it erases easily from the sleeve.

    • 3

Arrange the sleeves in your desired shape needed to lay out your dungeon design.

    • 4

Secure the sleeves in place with clips at the point the two pages touch to prevent your dungeon from sliding out of position if bumped.

    • 5

Draw the lines of your dungeon on the sleeves using the dry erase marker, using the grids on the paper inside the sleeves as a guide for the shape of the rooms.

    • 6

Unclip all the sleeves and wipe off with a paper towel when done playing. For persistent inks, dampen the paper towel before wiping.
