How to Kill a Draco Lich in Dungeons and Dragons

While undergoing an evil ritual, an evil dragon in "Dungeons and Dragons" can separate his body and soul from one another. The dragon's body dies, but the soul is preserved in a magical item called a phylactery. The dragon then possesses its own corpse, becoming a dracolich. The difficulty in killing a dracolich is that it is functionally immortal. The soul of the dracolich retreats to its phylactery if his body is ever destroyed. If a reptile corpse greater than four feet is within 90 feet of the phylactery, the dracolich's soul could possess it to gain a new body. The dracolich does not retain the characteristics of its new body. The dracolich transforms the corpse it inhabits into a copy of his original form.

Instructions

    • 1

Burn any reptile corpses four feet or longer in length until you destroy the phylactery. Without knowing the location of the phylactery, you should assume every corpse is close enough for the dracolich to possess.

    • 2

Scout where the dracolich's lair is located. If possible, attempt to determine what type of element it uses for its breath attack. Each type of dragon uses a different element for his breath attack. This is not usually that difficult or risky. Similar to dragons, dracolichs are usually fairly passive unless you annoy, threaten or harass him.

    • 3

Equip your characters with items that grant immunity to fear, and paralyze and grants damage resistance to the dracolich's element, if you determined what this was.

    • 4

Give every character healing items that can be used on himself or other party members.

    • 5

Approach the dracolich's lair during the day. This does not hamper its abilities, but unless your entire party is made of light-sensitive glasses with dark vision, attacking at night puts you at an unnecessary disadvantage.

    • 6

Spread the party out about 15 feet from each other and at least 30 feet from the dracolich. This should prevent it from being able to attack more than one person at a time, but not be far enough for it to be difficult to reach another party member to heal him if needed.

    • 7

Attack the dracolich with damage spells that ignore spell resistance. Spells that specifically target undead, dragons and evil creatures are all effective choices against a dracolich. Unless you have some way of ignoring part or all the spell resistance of the dracolich, it is difficult to get spells to land on him. Dracolichs are immune to virtually all status effects, so you can only really damage it. Party members without spells should use ranged weapons. As long as you keep your party spread out and do not run out of healing items, defeating the dracolich should not present a huge problem.

    • 8

Search the dracolich's hoard for his phylactery. It is a small object, usually a jewel or box, that has a dim glow to indicate the dracolich's soul is currently inside it.

    • 9

Search the spellcaster that created the dracolich or his home for the phylactery, if it is not in the hoard. If the phylactery is not located in the hoard or in the possession of the spellcaster, it is essentially impossible to find without the dungeon master giving you some type of clue to follow. You cannot rely on an ability to detect the phylactery because it is extremely easy to camouflage the phylactery from these spells. The dracolich would virtually never bother to do so, but the spellcaster virtually always does so.

    • 10

Smash the phylactery. This does not require any specialized ability or spell. Once the body and phylactery are destroyed, the dracolich is dead.
