How to Make a Sheet Ladder

Prisoners, juvenile delinquents and rebellious TV characters often construct a bed-sheet ladder to escape from a window. Bed-sheet ladders are risky compared to commercial safety ladders made from metal, but they can be effective with the right knots and materials. Although it is possible to make an effective escape ladder out of bedsheets, it is safer to use an approved commercial safety ladder in emergency situations, especially when descending from an upper-level window. Bed-sheet ladders are best for theatrical or pretend situations only.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase good quality sheets with a high thread count. They will support more weight than poor quality sheets. Do not wash the sheets in hot water or use bleach as this will weaken the threads.

    • 2

Tie simple knots in each sheet at 1-foot intervals.

    • 3

Tie the corners of sheets together with a sheet bend knot: Curve one corner into a hook shape, with the open end facing left. Take the corner of the other sheet and bring it under the bend of the hook, over the left side, under and over the right side, under itself and over the left side again. Pull the end tight to create a secure knot. Continue tying sheets together until the sheet is as long as needed.
