The Differences Between Dragonair & Dragonite

Dragonair and Dragonite are among the hundred of Pokemon that appear in the Pokemon franchise. These two Pokemon are featured in both the anime television production, in Pokemon trading cards and in various Pokemon games. Although Dragonair and Dragonite have a few things in common, their special features vary wildly.
  1. Dragonite

    • Dragonite is physically bulky and taller than most humans, yet has surprisingly swift speed and grace. Dragonite's body is almost entirely orange and possesses two arms and legs, each with three small claws; the Dragonite also has wings resembling that of dragons in European folklore. The Pokedex entry for Dragonite claims that it is a very rare Pokemon that is highly intelligent and the fastest flying of any known Pokemon. In Pokemon fights (depending on the game), the Dragonite's signature moves include Wing Attack, Outrage, Thunder, Flamethrower and Water Pulse. Dragonite is weakest against Ice, Rock and other Dragon creatures.

    Dragonair

    • Dragonair is a gentle yet strong serpentine Pokemon directly descended from Dratini. It is characterized physically by a blue serpentine body that can measure up to 13 feet long, dark eyes and a horn on its forehead. Small, dark blue orbs appear on Dragonair's neck and tail, which can be used as a light source. Dragonairs also occasionally fly without wings. Dragonairs can change weather climates by storing immense energy in its body and emitting it via their spheres. Dragonair's signature moves include Dragon Tail, Twister and Dragon Rush.

    Differences and Similarites

    • Both Dragonair and Dragonite are evolved from the same species, Dratini, and retain a few of Dratini's signature traits, such as the unicornlike horn on the head.

Dragonair is the evolutionary stage just before Dragonite, the final stage. Dragonairs evolve from Dratini at Level 30, which in turn evolves into Dragonite at Level 55. The physiology of the two Pokemon differ enormously, with Dragonites resembling a four-legged, almost humanlike dragon creature, whereas Dratini basically resembles a larger version of Dratini. Dragonites are much more powerful than Dragonairs in battle.

    Anime Appearances

    • A Dragonair first appeared in the 35th episode of the "Pokemon" animated series, titled "The Legend of Dratini." It aired in November 1997 in Japan, yet was banned in the United States. In this episode, a warden of the Safari Zone breeds a Dratini until it finally evolves into a Dragonair.

Dragonite first appeared as a giant, initially unknown Pokemon in the 13th episode of the series, titled "Mystery at the Lighthouse." It aired in Japan in June 1997 and aired in the United States about one year later. Later in the series, a Dragonite battles with Ash in episodes "Hello Pumello" and "Enter the Dragonite."
